The Frank Lloyd Wright Museum of Second Life

Doubtlessly, If Frank Lloyd Wright had access to Second Life®, he’d have been creating here. In the parlance of Second Life’s building block of virtual creation, he’d have redefined the prim.

Frank Lloyd Wright

It’s an assertion many will make upon a visit to one of SL’s newest and most fascinating museums. The Frank Lloyd Wright Museum of Second Life has been open less than a month and has garnered countless positive remarks from a multitude of visitors. No surprise. SL resident and visionary creator/builder, Frey Bravin, has brought forth a truly extraordinary tribute to one of the world’s preeminent architects. He has done so with such panache and aplomb, it’s a delight to experience each and every professionally exhibited detail.

When Frey built The Breeze, a popular Wine Bar and Gallery less than six months ago (now adjacent to the Museum) his vision was to eventually build the museum to share with Second LIfe the life work of one of his childhood heroes. I asked Frey about his first experience with Wright. “When I was a very little boy, there was a house about three miles from where I grew up in Michigan,” says Frey. “ It was built in 1940 for Greggor Affleck. I’ll never forget seeing it for the first time. I just fell in love with it. Later I discovered that it was a Wright and I started to study the man and his work.”

Without question, Frank Lloyd Wright is considered by most to have been one of the finest American artists of the period bridging the 19th and 20th centuries, A daunting task it is to pull off a virtual tribute that would measure up to this larger-than-life persona. After all, here is a man who was famous not only for his buildings and drawings but many enigmatic yet thoughtful remarks as well. Spontaneous quotes like, “Space is the breath of art” and “The cantilever is the life-line of human experience” give us clues to the depth of Frank Lloyd Wright. Frey Bravin and his staff and volunteers have pulled it off magnificently.

It certainly suggests a visit to his virtual Museum if not only for the pleasure of it, but for the metaphoric nature of his work. The exhibits themselves are SL works of art. In all, there are four main galleries devoted entirely to Frank Lloyd Wright, two virtual examples of Wright buildings built by Second Life’s Miltone Marquette, a video presentation of the architect’s “Falling Water” house, The Breeze Wine Bar and Galleries, Shops and an eye catching Yacht. Plans include expanding the Museum to eight full galleries, each exhibiting many facets of FLW.

If it’s art, architecture, photography, or creative thought one seeks, it’s at the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum of Second Life. And there is more. According to Frey, one of the things that has come out of this museum is that they are slowly building and bringing a very special andand unique community to SL. His vision: To bring together people made up of both RL and SL artists and craftspersons from many disciplines., a “melding” of existence. . Says Frey, “Some of the most creative people in SL seem to be finding there way here and they keep coming back.”

Make time to visit this stunning, spacious and exceptional landmark. The Frank Lloyd Wright Museum of SL, San Luis Bay (7, 48, 22).
